Rescue & Rehabilitation

Whispering Woods is a DEC certified wildlife rehabilitation center providing specialized care for injured and orphaned wildlife. Our mission is to rehabilitate each animal with compassion and expertise, preparing them for a safe return to their natural habitat where they belong.

Bear Cub Enclousure

Each year in New York State, black bear cubs are orphaned due to vehicle collisions, illness, habitat loss, and other human-related causes. Bear cubs depend on their mothers for survival during their first year of life, and without intervention, orphaned cubs cannot survive on their own.

Whispering Woods is currently working toward building a dedicated black bear cub rehabilitation enclosure to safely accommodate the growing number of orphaned, injured, and sick black bear cubs in need of care. Proper rehabilitation of bear cubs requires specialized facilities that allow for minimal human contact, appropriate enrichment, and the space necessary for healthy physical and behavioral development.

Once completed, Whispering Woods will become only the second DEC-authorized wildlife rehabilitator in New York State equipped to care for black bear cubs.

Please consider donating to help fund the completion of this critical enclosure and support our ongoing work providing lifesaving care to orphaned, sick, and injured wildlife.

Feeding Baby Raccoon

From Rescue to Release

At Whispering Woods, we follow a careful, step-by-step process designed to give animals the best chance of survival. When injured, sick, or orphaned animals arrive, they are first assessed by trained staff and provided with immediate medical care if needed. Each species receives specialized treatment, nutrition, and housing that meets its unique physical and behavioral needs. Throughout rehabilitation, human contact is minimized to prevent imprinting and ensure the animal can thrive in the wild. Once fully recovered and capable of independent survival, the animals are carefully released back into suitable natural habitats, completing their journey from rescue to freedom.

Volunteer

As we continue to grow, we rely on passionate volunteers to help build enclosures, care for wildlife, and support our mission of rehabilitation and release. If you’re interested in making a difference for New York’s native animals, contact Whispering Woods to learn about volunteering opportunities!
